So Beautiful, So Scary – Tapping on the Fear of Fully Living
We'll look at the Setup Statement, and how to choose words that don't create even more resistance
This is how a strip I did 20+ years ago begins… It’s a look at life from a place of fear.
Given what my life was made up of, everything I wanted to do seemed so entirely possible. I was a young woman rich with resources. Starting with the body I was in. I had a beautiful, fit, 30-something body to work with.
On top of that I had gifts in the form of talents and interests. Acting, writing, educating, and I was teaching myself how to draw cartoons.
I had great people all around me. So creative, so supportive, so inspiring.
It is true that I lived on the edge financially and that I was always worried about money… and THAT may be at the crux of what Ruby is dealing with here…
A deep-seated belief in scarcity
Not just the belief that I don’t HAVE enough, but that I, myself, AM NOT enough… to meet the challenge of doing what my beautiful life was calling me to do.
So beautiful. So scary.
Can you relate?
Is there anywhere in your life where you’re feeling a little bit of distance between what you’re capable of… what you know you could do with ‘the fine things that have been laid upon your table’, but… you’re just not doing it?
Or you ARE doing it, but not in the full-tilt-boogie way you know you’re capable of?
EFT TAPPING
Here’s where I use my Substack posts to bring in a little EFT Tapping. And since this is my first one, let’s start with the Setup Statement.
In Traditional EFT Tapping you start with a Setup Statement. It’s a statement that combines acknowledgment of the issue with self-acceptance.
Something like….
"Even though I have this [problem] fear of stepping fully into my life,
I deeply and completely love and accept myself."
You say your Setup Statement WHILE you tap on the side of your hand underneath your pinky finger. Aka the side of hand point …aka the karate chop point.
See where it is on the diagram: Point 1…
All of the points we tap on in tapping are “meridian end points” that correspond to different large organs and systems of the body, and the side of hand point corresponds to the small intestine meridian.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the small intestine meridian is associated with digestion…. assimilation of nutrients… decision-making.
So that’s kind of metaphorically cool, right?
By tapping on THIS point you’re helping yourself digest and assimilate something… something that heretofore has been a little confused, a little conflicted, a little reversed, a little resistant to change maybe.
Like your conscious mind is saying, “I want THIS (being more fully in my life)!”
…while at the same time, your subconscious mind is saying, “No frickin’ way do we want that! That’s dangerous!”
So tapping on this point on the side of the hand while saying the Setup Statement starts the process of clearing that subconscious resistance.
SNAFU
However…. saying something really nice to yourself like,
"Even though I have this [problem],
I deeply and completely love and accept myself."
…can create even more resistance!
I found this out when I was leading a client in a Setup Statement, and when he heard the “I deeply and completely love and accept myself” part he stopped tapping and said,
“If I have to say that, it’s going to make me want to throw furniture.”
Soooo, while on the one hand acknowledgement and self-acceptance are good things… On the other hand, the words you use as you bring those into the mix are all-important.
Introducing words like… CHOOSE… OPEN… CURIOUS
Here are good, better, and even better ways to phrase your Setup Statements.
"Even though I’m afraid to fully step into my life,
I deeply and completely accept myself."
Which is GOOD, but BETTER might be….
"Even though PART OF ME holds back
because I’m afraid of what might happen,
I can still CHOOSE to be kind and patient with myself."
Get how different? And even BETTER than that might be…
"Even though PART OF ME feels this fear
of fully engaging in my life,
I CHOOSE to be CURIOUS about what’s behind this fear
and OPEN to releasing it.
The point being that the language we use on ourselves matters.

Guided Setup Statement for ‘Fear of Living My Life Fully’
In the next installment of “Ruby’s Life” (there are 20 panels total, but I’m rolling them out 2 and 3 at a time for tapping purposes), we’ll go further into the tapping protocol and how it can be used to address the challenging emotions and limiting beliefs that hold us back.
Or…
…I would love that!
