Not that long ago my husband Richard and I became friends with another couple in town. Even though they’d only recently moved to Walpole, they’d already created a really cool community of friends. Very happily for us, they took a shine to us and brought us into their fold.
One day I learned that creating community isn’t just a biproduct of them being great cooks who can pull together a fun gathering with ease, it’s an actual MISSION. “Bringing some light into the situation” is how Ed phrased it.
I was so struck by this intentional, thoughtful use of their resources, their gifts that it made me wonder, “Do I have a mission?… Or am I just kind of winging being a good person?”
I guess I’m kind of winging it because I couldn’t state a mission.
The question floated around in my unconscious mind for weeks… and then, while messing around with my Substack logo… and headers… and banners over in Canva (god, I love Canva), I got it.
I knew it as soon as I typed it (the tag line in my header), so I tried it out loud.
“MY mission is…. helping people over humps.”
YES!!!!!
But what is a hump?
Humps are naturally occurring obstacles in life that have the power to stop you from going where you want to go.
But when you do what it takes to get over/through/past them, humps make you stronger, wiser, more YOU.
Which means humps are good, not bad. They are for your growth.
How best to navigate humps?
The very best thing I’ve come across to help people navigate their hump-of-the-moment is Mindfulness-Centered EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping.
It’s so straightforward, so easily incorporated into a life, and just a really efficient, effective way to practice things worth getting good at…
acceptance of what is
letting go of what’s not working
opening to what’s possible
creating helpful habits of mind
…to name just a few.
And Ruby is at the ready, eager to help me to with my mission!
Who is Ruby?
Ruby is a stick figure with a little red dress.
Ruby is the communicator of my innermost challenges (pretty common, universal stuff). And the one who gets a good hit of insight from time to time.
Ruby is also a bit of a soapboxer - a real champion of the things she’s passionate about. Like humps and tapping.
That’s why she’s so perfect for what I have in mind for my Substack presence…
The format
The idea for EFT Tapping with Ruby is… one part memoir-esque visual storytelling…. one part philosophical self-reflection... one part EFT Tapping script.

How about you?
💕 When you give “having a mission” some thought, can you say what yours might be (or is) in a sentence or two?
💕 Or maybe “winging it” is the way to go for you?
💕 When you bring attention to what you do in a day that makes life better for yourself and others, what are the things that stand out?
Please share. Your thoughts in relation to what I’m thinking about are always sooo appreciated, so here’s a button that makes it easy….
Thanks for being part of my community!
